Field Archaeology Summer 1: Monastic Midlands – Uncovering the Archaeology of Ireland’s Hidden Heartland

Date: June 20th, 2027 – July 17th, 2027
Location: Birr, Co. Offaly, Ireland

We are excited to continue our research project studying the Monastic Midlands in County Offaly.

This program is run in partnership with the Institute for Field Research and is accredited by Connecticut College in the US.

This field school is intricately embedded within local communities and takes a truly landscape scale approach to archaeological research. The program begins by examining the geological and glacial processes that shaped the landscape in which the early saints founded their monasteries. It will then apply a range of archaeological survey, recording and research techniques to interpret the sites they left behind, documenting the earthworks, structures, architectural fragments and grave slabs that continue to survive at these monasteries.
The program, which aims to teach a variety of skills that will help prepare students for a career in the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) sector, includes the following modules:

  • landscape assessment including geology, glacial morphology and the availability of natural resources in the landscape through time
  • a wide range of survey techniques including the principals of baseline survey (tape survey), total station survey, graveyard recording, building recording etc
  • photogrammetry and drone use in archaeology
  • an introduction to the Single Context recording system, focused on osteoarchaeological training through simulated excavations
  • an introduction to experimental archaeology and the contribution this field can make in public heritage
  • an introduction to community archaeological practice, including service projects that will help the local community reach their objectives for leading regional heritage sites
  • an extensive set of field trips that will provide a baseline understanding of the early medieval history of Ireland, the Monastic Midlands, County Offaly and many of its leading sites

The program, which is four-weeks in duration, operates three times during the year:

  • Winter: Sunday 03-Jan-27 to Saturday 30-Jan-27
  • Summer 1: Sunday 20-Jun-27 to Saturday 17-Jul-27
  • Summer 2: Sunday 18-Jul-27 to Saturday 14-Aug-27

Staying with local families in homestay accommodation, this program also offers a deeply enriching cultural immersion, guaranteeing students a truly memorable experience.

Registration for this program is managed through the Institute for Field Research application portal. Applications are typically open at the end of summer, but you can pre-register with us by clicking the ‘Register Now’ button.
